Even better, instead of the HDD, put the OS on an SSD.

That's just it though, SSD's are still too expensive to get bang for buck.

Here's what I would build:

CPU: 139.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103649
MB: 134.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131366
MEM: 100.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145220
VID: 2x 104.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102835
PSU: 120.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139006
HDD: 80.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136033
CD/DVD: 24.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827136152
MON: 150.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824009145
CASE: 100.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811163125

About $1050.00 for my computer.... :P

Why:

CPU: Quad core processors don't offer much more performance than than triple core processors, however the triple cores offer enough of a boost over the dual cores to make them worth the extra 30-40 dollars. AMD Phenom II x3 offers great bang for buck. It's a fast processor at a great price.

MB: Well, I wanted to do a crossfire build to save money and ASUS makes some of the best AMD boards around. Also, the FSB on this board was really high and that's a big plus. For 130.00 this board is a steal.

MEM: CORSAIR makes some of the highest quality memory around, and this memory is fast enough to match the speed of the FSB on the MB. 6GB is overkill but when we throw a 64BIT OS on our new machine it will work to our benefit.

VID: ATI's new 4770 has great bang for buck and when put into a crossfire configuration. They can easily compare with more expensive cards like the ATI 4890 or NVIDIA 285. Unless you're playing on resolutions more than 1920x1200 there's no need to spend more than 220+ dollars.

PSU: Corsair makes the highest quality PSU's hands down. Don't ever skimp out on a PSU. A faulty PSU can cost you your whole system. 750 Watts is more than enough for this system. :)

HDD: You want a fast HDD for quick load times, enough storage space to game, and something that's not going to kick you in the ass when your GF is begging for you to take her to the movies. I don't want less than 74GB of storage space on my computer and I don't want to spend more than 100.00 on an HDD so SSD's aren't for me. The western digital 74GB 10,000 RPM Raptor drives are the perfect balance between space/price/speed. If I want to store data I'll buy and external storage device later.

CD/DVD: LG makes some of the best cd/dvd rom writers out there and they're dirt cheap.

MON: Acer has been making monitors for years. They're cost effective high-res LCDs with a solid response time for playing games.

CASE: I often see computers that are custom built and look like hell. SilverStone makes the highest quality custom cases. They might cost you 40 dollars more, but they make the world of difference.
