If you're only majoring in Graphic Design because you don't know what else to major in then I highly suggest you really do some sole searching. I know a lot people pick Graphic Design as a major because they think it's easy or they never really thought seriously about what it is that they want do with themselves so they figure, "Graphic design sounds like fun, and I know Photoshop, yay!" First of all, Photoshop doesn't make you a graphic designer, or even a good designer (not saying you aren't good). There is a whole process involved with designing that has nothing to do with the computer ( I won't in-depth with all that here, but you learn all about this at a good art school). Second, the average graphic designer isn't making six figures a year, but for those passionate about design, that's not much of an issue because it's not about the money for them. Lastly, graphic designers are constantly being pumped out of art schools every year - I think I read once that over 300,000 graduate every year, so the field is saturated, which makes it's very competitive. Like Gigi said, you don't need school to be a graphic designer - though you're job prospects a little higher with BFA. You need to be passionate, and willing to constantly learn and compete in a field with so many other competitive designers. |
