I'm currently reading a book for Anthropology on mail-order brides and transnational relationships, and I was wondering how many of you would ever marry someone you met on the internet?
Why or why not?

Not without meeting them in person first.

No matter what people say, the internet really only shows part of who a person is. People can be one way online and turn out to be different in person. If I like someone I know on the internet, meet them and like them in person as well, then all's good.

as long as you are with them in person at some point then i don't think it's a big deal for people to marry people they met on the internet. i don't see how meeting someone on the internet is really any different than meeting them at a bar or meeting them at school. it's just a form of finding out a person exists just like anything else. this is strictly only in regards to meeting them, not being with them.

that being said, people who get married and have only been in an online relationship are nuts. it's hard to know if you can handle being married to someone even in normal relationships that aren't long distance. it's 77 times harder if you haven't been around them A LOT. if you haven't been around them much in person then i don't know what your basis for thinking you can stand being married to them is.
