so watchmen, who wants to see it?
it comes out in 2009. "In a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot." Written by Evan Murphy. |

I saw it last night. I have mixed feelings about it.
Firstly, the cinematography and art direction were wonderful -- not as good as 300, but the movie looked pretty good. I think the feel of the film -- a gritty, almost dystopian world -- is a breath of fresh air in the genre of superhero movies, as is the story of the fall, rather than the rise, of a group of superheroes. But I think the plot meanders too much. By the last half of the movie, I forgot what the plot really was. Were the heroes trying to prevent nuclear war with the Soviets? Or were they trying to find out who was trying to kill them? Or was Blue Man (aka Dr. Manhattan) trying to find his place in the universe? The plot lines were all related, but at a certain point they began to diverge too much, and the lack of cohesion in the story turned to general confusion. Oh, and at 2 hour and 45 minutes, the movie is way too long. Combined with the meandering plot line, I was pretty happy to get out of the theater. I feel like Stephenie Meyer, J.K. Rowlings, and The Watchmen production staff must've hired the same editor. |
