Ok, so I just got my Papa Johns delivery, and I am looking over the receipt, when I come across something interesting. They charge you for them to deliver the pizza. Now I have no problem tipping people, but my question is this:

Should you HAVE to tip the driver if they are already giving him/her the delivery charge?

QUOTE
First of all, I really don't appreciate the personal jabs, i.e. comments about what type of person I am and what type of person my mother was. My mom put herself through college by being a waitress. She worked everything from diners to classy restaurants with no prices on the menus, so believe me, I grew up knowing what good service is or isn't and I know all about proper tipping etiquette, tyvm.

Oh no, you don't appreciate it?? That's really different; usually when I make personal jabs toward someone they enjoy it immensely. Also, I'll be the first to inform you that I never insulted your mother... no use jumping to conclusions and getting defensive. Oh and by the way, I'm really glad you told me she was a waitress 20 years ago. That gives your argument much more credibility--next time there's a debate about medicine I'll be sure to offer my two cents, because since my dad is a heart surgeon, I surely must know all about it.
QUOTE
I never said that I didn't tip. I'm saying that if I feel like I'm getting shitty service, no way in hell am I going to feel obligated to tip just because "aw, the poor waitress... she's got no other source of income!"

I never assumed you didn't tip. And I am starting to think you lack some reading comprehension skills... I never said you are obligated to tip because "aw, the poor waitress... she's got no other source of income!"... If you weren't always so dead-set on arguing with me (don't worry, I have noticed) you wouldn't being making an ass out of yourself by making assumptions regarding my standpoint. Next time there's any confusion, it is possible to have a conversation with someone and allow them to clarify their point before attacking an argument that does not exist.

I'll restate my stance now, so you don't need to argue about things that I never said. I initially posted on this topic because I saw someone laughing about leaving a 1 cent tip for a server who didn't greet them for 30 minutes. This lead me to comment on (#1) How rude it is to laugh about something like that and (#2) How this problem could have easily been avoided if the customer made an effort to not sit there for 30 minutes. Because I don't know about you, but I would never have a "I had to wait 30 minutes for a server" story, because after ten I'd either do something about it (i.e. getting a manager involved) or I would leave. And I also informed them that the server who made the mistake was most likely not even allowed to wait on them, so they probably tipped a server poorly for a different server's mistake.

Like I said before, and I'll repeat myself for you: I don't always tip 20%. If my service is bad and I can't find any reason why it would be bad, other than the server was lazy, I do not feel obligated to give them a 20% tip. I never said you should always give your servers a good tip even if you get bad service, so come off it.
QUOTE
And let me rephrase myself. If you're working in customer-service and your income depends on how happy the customer is with their service, then f*ck yeah, the customer is always right. Now, if you've resigned yourself to the fact that the customer is a douche and a lost cause, feel free to give them shitty service; it's not like you're getting that tip anyways. But if you WANT to make money, the best way about it is to give them what they need, when they need it, and to keep them as happy as possible.

Thanks for telling me how to do a job you've never done in your life before. That was my point of view when I first started serving, but with some experience in the industry you learn that this is not always possible. If you really want to know how to make money waiting tables (and by offering me advice on how to do so only indicates to me your level of interest on the subject)... you'll learn that you make the most money by prioritizing certain tables over others. The businessmen who are clearly experienced diners who are polite, patient, and understanding always have priority over the whiny, needy tables. Their bills are usually higher, and since they go out to eat so often, they know what good service is and they reward you properly. In fact, usually when someone comes in expecting us to to be their personal assistant for an hour, they probably don't even spend that much money. Thanks for your advice, but there's a way to make money in serving and most servers already know this.
QUOTE
Please don't make assumptions. It really just makes an ass out of you and... well, mainly you.

Same thing goes to you. And it's funny, because I really don't think I'm making any assumptions about you, unless your behavior in person differs from your online persona.
QUOTE
I'm sorry that we're not all as "experienced" in restaurant service as you are. I don't speak for all of us, but most of us are probably out there doing something more productive with our lives.

f*ck you. So I guess your mom wasn't being productive when she waited tables? Since when it is productive to brag about not doing a particular job? Are you above waiting tables now? You don't know shit about my life or what I've had to do the past few years, so instead of making assumptions about my productivity, you really need to check yourself before you insult something I've done to feed, not only myself, but my brothers for the past few years. In addition to going to school full-time, I've had to take more responsibility in my family than you probably even have a concept of. Grow the f*ck up.

So you never waited tables... and this makes you better than me somehow? This just proves that you have the idea that serving is below someone like you. Honey, it's a JOB just like any other job. A lot of people, LIKE YOU, come into the restaurant assuming that servers are just losers going nowhere in life, and therefore they treat their server like shit. It's people, LIKE YOU, who make the job so shitty. Once you bring "tips" into the picture, you're at the mercy of people who think your sole purpose in life is to serve. Try having class all day, then serving on your feet for hours, and then coming home around midnight to try to do as much homework as possible before the next day. It's hard as shit, and if I didn't have to do that at the time, there are hundreds of other things I'd rather be doing. But it wouldn't make sense for me to think I'm not doing something productive with my life, just because the particular job I chose was waiting tables.

Tell your mom what you just said to me. And tell ALL your friends who serve that you think they aren't doing anything productive with their lives. You are a spoiled little brat.
QUOTE
Anyways, I'm done with this. It's mainly you going around thinking that people here are shitty people who don't tip when all we're trying to say is that we wont tip for shitty service.

Good. Because you've pissed me off enough as it is. I hope you keep your word in shutting-the-f*ck-up too. And that last line illustrates your misunderstanding of my argument. Again.
