Ok, so I just got my Papa Johns delivery, and I am looking over the receipt, when I come across something interesting. They charge you for them to deliver the pizza. Now I have no problem tipping people, but my question is this:

Should you HAVE to tip the driver if they are already giving him/her the delivery charge?

It's just really interesting, because a lot of Americans have taken the whole tipping situation and ran with it. It's no secret that America has the best customer service in the world because of tipping. But I guarantee you that 90% of all servers you ask would prefer to get paid hourly, even if it's less than what they're making now. Why? Because getting paid in tips sucks.

Some customers think a tip is extra, and you only deserve one if you go above and beyond for their fat ass eating their 4000 calorie dinner.

Some customers think that, just because they're in control of your tip, you have to do whatever they want for the whole hour. I had one guy at my table harass me and ask me for my number, threatening to not give me a tip if I didn't give it to him. I didn't, and he didn't tip me (on an $80 bill, by the way, so I missed out on $16 because of that chauvinistic pig). You get people asking you to check the scores of games, you get people asking you to watch their babies and to not leave the table while they go to the restroom, you get people asking you to cut their bread and put butter on it for them... all these things while you're busy, and trying to work on your other tables too. And if don't do any of these things in a satisfactory way, there goes your tip!

Some customers are rude, demanding, and genuinely affect your ability to wait on your other tables because they want all your attention. Then you get a shitty tip from all your tables.

Of course, even though I'm not waiting tables right now, that's what I did for the past two years and I'll tell you this much...
If you're getting bad service, you're probably in a cheap restaurant where waitresses just don't give a f*ck... or your server can tell you will be a bad tipper. All the typical stereotypes aside, waiters can tell if you are a bad tipper just by your attitude.


Anyways, most people earn money by putting in hours and going to work. If a server went to work for six hours, but unfortunately only had one table, and their well-done steak took a long time to come out (so it SURELY must be the bad service, right???) and the idiot table tips the server $8 on an $80 bill... the server just made $8 working 6 hours. But I guess the server deserves that, right, for not having a better job?

The customer isn't responsible for providing the server's income so stop trying to guilt trip the rest of us who don't work in a restaurant environment into doing so. I've worked as a hostess once and even though we get an hourly pay, I would have rather been a server. As a whole, most people aren't douches, so it sort of makes it hard to believe that your job as a server is really oh-so-hard.

A lot of my friends in high school have jobs as waiters and they make much more than my hourly job right now. It's not an ideal job, but at least it's a job, so do what you need to do to make money. Is that really such a hard concept to grasp?

Funny you should say this, because when I was a hostess I always thought that too. I REALLY wanted to be a server, because of all the money they were making. It always confused me why servers complained so much, because they were making more money than I was. It's amazing how drastically my position on this subject has changed since then.

So who, exactly, pays the server's income? The restaurant? No... the people who come into the restaurant. Which means, YOU, ME, and everyone else. The benefits of having had worked in a restaurant environment is that you understand the importance of the whole tipping issue.

Hell no! First of all, the customer is NOT always right. It's so funny how people always think this. I'm frequently a "customer" and I KNOW that I'm not always right. Only those with a sense of entitlement really truly believe in this mantra. So, a customer is RIGHT to flip out on their server because their steak, a well-done filet, is taking 30 minutes? No, the customer is WRONG because (1) any "foodie" will tell you that spending $30 on a steak and then cooking it well done is ruining your steak. You might as well have bought a $15 sirloin and called it a day. (2) AND if that person really does just want their steak cooked well done, it takes a lot longer to actually cook it. So, the customer is freaking out because we can't turn one of our entrees into an appetizer? But they're right somehow? The customer is RIGHT when they demand to know the score of a game that isn't even on TV, and they complain until a manager has to go into the back office and check it for them? Yes, it IS like babysitting people who are older than me and more accomplished than me. I bet if a customer asked me to change their diaper for them, you'd expect me to do that for them too. And for the most part, most people ARE douches when they go out to eat. If you serve, you'll figure this out pretty quickly. As a hostess, I generally enjoyed everyone that came into the restaurant and was perplexed when servers came up to me bitching at me for giving them that table. Well, now I know. People get really weird when they go out to eat, you wouldn't know, so don't tell me it's not that way. You are probably one of those people.

NO IT'S NOT A HARD CONCEPT TO GRASP. Is it such a hard concept to grasp that usually, at least where I've worked, servers do what they need to do to make money... and because the of the customer's ignorance on the proper tipping percentage, or because the customer wasn't able to get their way 100% of the time in the restaurant, OUR income is affected?? The reason why we get so upset is because when WE do our part, the customer sometimes doesn't. I would rather get paid as much as the hosts (even though our job is 100 times more difficult than theirs) than to deal with the extreme stress of catering to idiots all day in order to hopefully get a tip I deserve. It's not the money, it's the job, which is WHY I don't do it anymore but...

I go out to eat. Probably more often than you do. And I act appropriately when I go out to eat--I behave myself, act like an adult, and I tip correctly. If I get lazy service, they get a bad tip. If my server makes a little mistake that doesn't affect my dining experience too badly, I'll give them a normal tip. You don't have to listen to me, I'm not trying to "guilt trip" anyone. I'm not your mom, SHE should have taught you your manners, not me.
