I feel like I've got a decent understanding of HTML, CSS, and all that jazz, so I want to move on. My boyfriend complains non stop about Java, so what the hell, I have to give it a shot.

What's the best way to start? Get a book about it?

Hm. iPod applications are generally written in Objective-C; you can maybe write them in Java, but I'm not sure, but even if you can, it's really, really ugly (I'm speaking from experience writing desktop applications in Java for Mac OS X, which is similar).
