I'm pretty sure Shanghai dumplings are pot stickers (锅贴) (that's literally what they are called in Chinese...wor teep. Wor = pot/pan/ceramic pot whatever, teep = sticker). Xiao long bao are called something else I think...soup dumpling? I love both of them either way. btw they're not dim sum in the traditional sense, just regular Shanghai food (WHICH IS SO GOOD).
Either way, "Shanghai dumplings" is a really general term. It just means dumplings from Shanghai. And dumplings can refer to any number of kinds of dumplings, including xiaolong bao and pot stickers. http://newyork.seriouseats.com/images/2008...um-crullers.jpg I FREAKING LOVE THESE.
