Well maybe he thinks you are attractive but has a gf... Just be friends with him if so because you don't want to be the cause of them breaking up. This would make you look bad.
OR
He was really thought you would be cool to hang with then he found out that you like him through friends. Then he was creeped out and wanted to see if you did like him and notice that you stare at him a lot. Probably he says that he has a gf so you could back off? Suggesting.
