I am in 8th Grade Advance Language Arts. So my Language Advance arts teacher is pretty good at doing critical thinking with quotes and reasons, but when we have to do essays, he gives us restricted words we can't use. Examples - FROM NOW ON TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR; We can't use the word it, because it is a weak pronoun that takes place over a noun. IF WE DO WE LOSE 10 POINTS OF OUR FINAL GRADE FOR EACH TIME WE USE "IT" IN THE STORY. DOG / CAT STORIES ; We must use five of the senses in a sensory description way for every paragraph we make, and we can't use the words "dog, cat, feline, puppy, kitty." ---------------- I see he's trying to make us better, and if we get our work published with somewhere related to the press (newspaper, t.v,) then we get an automatic "A". :) Plus now we have to keep a portfolio of our work before we go to High School. ---------------- How was or now, your eighth grade LA teacher? |

How can you not use "it"? You should be crafty and use "that" instead.

"That" is a good substitute. :) ![]() My eighth grade teacher was pretty sweet. She was really nice and I learned more about English from her than any other teacher. To wards the middle of the school year she got pregnant and had to leave and we got stuck with an incredibly stupid teacher. ![]() You're lucky, and did you learn anything from your "incredibly stupid substitute teacher?" |

Like in my preceding sentence, I used "it"; how else could I express my thoughts? My eighth-grade English teacher was cool, and told corny jokes. xD He explained the literary present (the tense you write in when describing literary events) by telling us to think of it as a moving photograph in Harry Potter. Like, even though the photograph shows a past moment, the people in them still wave to you... It's hard to explain now, and it was almost four years ago, so yeah. |
