Cooper's sexual orientation has been a source of speculation, especially within the gay and lesbian community. In his official biography and his many television interviews he has never talked about his sexuality.

An article written by Village Voice columnist Michael Musto for Out magazine's March 2005 issue [1] made broad speculations that Cooper is gay, but its opinions were unsourced. The article's appearance, however, sparked a flurry of attention that was amplified by tabloids, blogs, and gossip websites. Six months later, Cooper was asked to comment on the resulting "just under the radar" curiosity about his sexuality by Jonathan Van Meter of New York magazine, and he gave the following response:

"You know, I understand why people might be interested. But I just don’t talk about my personal life. It’s a decision I made a long time ago, before I ever even knew anyone would be interested in my personal life. The whole thing about being a reporter is that you're supposed to be an observer and to be able to adapt with any group you’re in, and I don’t want to do anything that threatens that."
