i'm not completely rejecting him, it's just that he asked me to be his girlfriend and i do like him, i just feel like i don't deserve him because he's too sweet to me and i could never return that the way he does to me. i have some self esteem problems..but anyway, how does this sound:

i like you, i just don't want to put labels on things just yet. i'm going through some personal issues right now, and i feel like i've already told you too much, and i don't want you to have to deal with the shit i'm dealing with.

is it too mean? it's 100% true, so i'm not exaggerating or lying to him.

if the real reason is because you don't feel "worthy" to be treated like all women should be, then yeah, maybe you don't deserve it.
