Sorry for the huge post. I have diarrhea of the...keyboard?
Practice depends on what kind of piece you're playing. If the piece demands a lot of movement and complexity from both hands, you should practice each hand separately. When you get really good at playing it separately, try and play it together - this is where segmented practicing comes in handy. I usually practice in half-phrase segments, so usually in 4 bars. But if a bar is particularly hard, I might spend like 2 hours just repeating it over and over. Usually I just practice in segments though. You should never practice a piece from start to finish and call it a day...that's the most ineffective thing you can do. KC, just try this...hold your palm flat against a table. Then, try to strike the table as hard as you can with your fourth (ring) finger. Can't do it very hard, right? You're also probably not hitting it with the tip of your finger. Then, hold your palm so that it's in a curved position, like half of a tennis ball is under it. Your fingertips should be touching the surface of the table. Then, lift your fourth finger and strike the table as hard as you can with it, with your fingertip. You should find that it will be a lot easier to hit and with more strength. And it probably required less clenching of the bicep too (When I lifted the finger, I had it at least 2 inches above the table's surface). Since most of the strength comes from your fingertips, it's a good idea to have very short nails when playing piano. I once got my fingernail caught in between two keys while playing a Bach fugue and f**k OW. Not fun. Sean - that girl is awesome. |
