i haven't read this or anything but i have read two books on king arthur. the symbolism is basically honesty and the sword itself. arthur asks his fellow knight to do him one last favor before he dies but his knight decides to keep it and when arthur asks him what happens, bedivere replies, "nothing, just ripples" which arthur knew was FALSE FALSE FALSE LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE. so he made him go throw it back into the lake. he was basically asking him one favor and he couldn't do it until arthur made him go back there again until the correct answer left his mouth, "a hand reached up and grabbed the sword". the sword symbolizes triumph, beauty, bravery and the event of him asking him symbolized arthur's trust in the knight and the knight's greed of keeping the sword although he eventually threw it back and obeyed his king.

well greed is a sort of strong word, i'd use another but i can't think of one at the moment. hope that helps.
