They said they would going in a different direction...and I was skeptical. Being a longtime Coldplay fan, change is hard to accept. It took a few listens, but their new single "Violet Hill" is simply great.
The very beginning started off sounding a lot like something from X&Y (and I thought to myself, ahh shit), but it turned out to be something much more enjoyable than 3/4 of their previous album (which was a disappointment overall). Love the heavy chords...the overall heaviness of the song that contrasts with their usual style is what gives this single its appeal. I've honestly had the chorus stuck in my head for a week now, and I don't mind it at all. Perhaps change is what they needed. This departure from their usual sound is refreshing. Their new richer and darker sound leaves you wanting for more. However, the ending gives you a taste of Coldplay a la A Rush of Blood to the Head which I love. I'm stoked for the rest of the album! I have yet to gather my thoughts on the other single, Viva la Vida. |
