it definitely depends on the relationship you have between the guy. as synrko said, the best way is to just ask. to hell with awkwardness, if a guy takes you out to dinner with intentions of dating but you treat it as hanging out, that's just going to cause even more awkwardness later on, or the situation vice versa. i'm straightforward with all guys so i have no problem asking if the situation is ambiguous.
as for the "general" movie + dinner thing, I've done it as a hanging out thing and I've done it as a more date-like thing. I've actually done both with one guy before actually rofl. also, if a girl does this movie+dinner thing thinking it's just a normal hangout and doesn't ask questions, she HAS to keep her guard up and pick up hints to see if the guy is behaving a little differently than he usually is. if the girl feels the guy's treating her more affectionately etc etc she needs to just come right out and ask what his intentions are before things get meeeessy. |
