what is the differences/advantages to using a subdomain (music.mysite.com) rather than just having a slash and the page name (mysite.com/music) (what is it called when you use the slash?) responses appreciated. thanks!

If you create a new folder in your directory, it can work as mysite.com/folder. However, if you make a subdomain, it can also work as mysite.com/subdomain - at least in my case it does. Since some people don't like the .htm or .php extension on their pages, they can create separate folders for them.
