I don't live in Asia, but I know a lot of people that live there with really good English.
I'm not sure about other countries, but I know Korea makes English a mandatory subject in school. I think it starts from around middle school, and its treated like any other subject. Some families apply to be home stay houses -- I actually know quite a few people who learned English through constant interaction with foreigners. Some people in Asia go to International schools. Others just study really hard, go to a lot of academies, and practice like mad. There are some people, especially those that major in English, that learn it for the major. There are so many ways ... but for the most part, the masses, even after learning English in school, aren't too great. |
