Most of you toys think that self-respecting hiphop heads actually listen to artists like Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and the like, but you prove your n00bish, toy-like existence by not recognizing the classic albums. The following albums that I will post (and dispute) in this thread are certified hiphop classics from a purist's standpoint.

On April 19, 1994, the world of hiphop was taken by storm for, what was considered, the epitome of east coast hiphop of that time period. Nasty Nas dropped Illmatic. The entire album provides a visual of sitting on a an old bench in the dead of winter, bullshittin' with brothas from around the way about so and so, and what happened when the cops came through. Its like getting a hood lecture from that one young cat that ran with the older kids and was wise well beyond his years. If you're ignorant to Illmatic, you've been missing out.

Son, we need to talk...

If you're going to stake claim, then back it up with some facts, dunny.

Lupe is one of the premier lyricists of all time? How. Explain. You like him, great. Grab one of all my albums and stop daydreamin.

Let me dumb it down for you...

Although Lupe Fiasco is quickly setting himself up to be recognized as great, there is too many clouds of doubt concerning the future of his career. He's even said himself that he's getting tired of hiphop and will bow out of the game after his third LP is dropped. Longevity isn't a required to be great, but it does help. Lupe is still aquafresh, he needs that extra kick to push him further in the right direction.

Herbie Hancock.

i don't think i'm prepared to put fiaco's name with common, kweli, or mos def just yet.

and for good reason, too.

Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest

i've been listening to this just about my whole life. my dad played this album constantly for years and years. i liked this when i was five, and my liking for it has only grown as i've become more conscious and informed about hip hop. i love the beats on this album. the lyrics are concious, clever and still stay fun. they flow perfectly over the jazz infused tracks. the sampling is amazing. i can't find anything that i don't like about this album.

i've argued a lot on whether low end theory is better, or midnight marauders is. it's close, i always choose this one though.

Check the Rhime:

who could get tired of this? always makes me feel good.

For years, I've heard that this album would be better paired with Midnight Marauders and released as a double CD. Much like how Ice Cube's Amerikkkaz Most Wanted and Death Certificate albums sound like they could be one. The Low End Theory gets a little more rugged than it predecessor.
