i understand asking questions elicits responses from others, not only that but emotions as well. But how really do you get others to open up in conversation...getting them comfortable with you?

it depends on the person
you could compliment them on an item of clothing and ask where they got it you could tell a good joke or a funny story you could ask them if they want something to drink (depending on where you are) i usually just try small talk and sit with them as often as i can it works
