i understand asking questions elicits responses from others, not only that but emotions as well. But how really do you get others to open up in conversation...getting them comfortable with you?

I show them that I am trustworthy and care first. Then I share some of my life with them, You know just talk. Then I hope they open up. This takes quite a while but never fails.
