I believe metal is because of the dynamics involved.
Such bands as Dragon Force, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Arch Enemy and such. Debate. Yes, this is a debate. Why are such genre's so great? What about them makes them better than others, and why? |

I think instrumental Jazz because of the improvisational possibilities not afforded to many other types of music. The incorporation of different types of sounds, like trumpet with piano in the background. Miles Davis was great, but that's such a generalization. Favorites as of now would be Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. But as to Jake's debate, if you can really call it that...
Sure, heavy metal bands do occasionally have great "dynamics" involved with their music, but what is music without harmony? I wont say that everyone hears Heavy Metal music and relates it to pure noise, but I do and many other people do. Drums alone do not make great music. Good music is a compilation of different, orchestrated sounds that compliment eachother. Many Heavy Metal bands, particularly scream-o bands, neglect this rule and rely heavily on noise. I sound like a huge hypocrit. I rarely listen to Jazz music, it's mostly alternative rock music from the early to mid 90's, or classic rock from the drug revolution. As of right now, I am listening to Nothin' Song by Alice in Chains, and they're making a lot of noise, but I like it still. Emo and scream-o both suck monkey balls. Debate that. |

Firstly, as a musician, I can tell you that, improvisation is not as hard as it seems. Once a musician learns a certain amount of techniques, he is able to then throw them together with ease. As for writing a music piece...that's a different story. It takes time and energy, along with superb musical understanding. All great music is made by great musicians. They know what they are doing and what goes with what. As for your arguement about metal not having any harmony, I have to disagree with you. At any certain time in most metal songs, there are a number of harmonies going on, especially that of guitars. From experience, harmony is a hard technique to get down, and it takes alot more time than people would think. There's one thing I will agree with you, is that screamo and emo sucks. BIG BALLS! QUOTE (tungmyBANANA @ Oct 10 2007, 12:21 PM) Hey, I enjoy listening to screamo core music. But I guess it isn't the GREATEST genre of all time. I really think that soul R&B was one of the greatest genre of all time. QUOTE (SoEffinMajor @ Oct 10 2007, 10:32 PM) i totally agree with u there :) It's basically play a riff over and over again screaming at the top of your lungs about how some bitch cheated on you and she lost out big time. It's not even that. They rarely use their lungs. Haha. You know how they get that whiney voice? They try to sing higher notes without volumizing. Like, when you're just singing along to a song, really low, and a high note comes up and you pretty much whisper it. That's how they do it. QUOTE Hey, I enjoy listening to screamo core music. Why is Soul and R&B the greatest ever? That's what we're trying to get at. If you don't know how to debate, go masterbate. |
