Has anyone here seen and loved "Hairspray"? It's one of my favorite musicals, and I LOVE the music!
They're making a movie version of the musical. (Strange; first a movie, then a musical based on the movie, and now a movie based on the musical...) The cast list is really impressive! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427327/ I'm not sure I can see John Travolta as being Mama, though... |

I still like this movie. The original is classic but this one was still fun. So entertaining and a lot of actors/actresses I really like in it so I thought it was still a great movie. |

^^ I still like this movie. The original is classic but this one was still fun. So entertaining and a lot of actors/actresses I really like in it so I thought it was still a great movie. "Great" I think is a bit much. For one, the musical production was really hit and miss. Some of the songs were relevant, appropriate, upbeat, and funny. However, a few others were heavy handed, poorly appropriated, and just lame. The sub-plots were developed almost more than the main plot which saw too much resolution and not nearly as much development. The humor wasn't as smart and biting as it could have been. And, worse of all, modern cinema has no idea how to handle race relations: That marching protest (accompanied by cheesy, yet embarrassingly serious tears from the Queen) was quite possibly the lamest, most ridiculous, and "progressive" bullshit I've ever seen. Hollywood is so determined to prove it isn't racist, it's really quite sad. Waters did a much more effective and enlightening job in caring to address the race issues within. Where Waters was patient, this musical adaptation was spastic and bored. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was alright, but saying it was "great" is going a bit far I think. |
