Did the distance break us up?, Or was there a temptation?? Options

So my boyfriend of 4 months just broke up with me (2 hours before going on vacation as a matter of fact) about a week ago. We had such a fabulous time together and all his friends always told me how much of a great guy he was and that I was lucky to have him...and I was! I appreciated everyday and night together and let him know that. We're in college, and the summertime sucks because we're 300 miles apart. On one night when I got upset at saying goodbye he assured me that we would be together this summer, work it out and see each other whenever we could. That was probably one of the most reassuring things he's ever said to me. He's the type of guy who rarely shows emotions, partly because his father passed away when he was 16 (he's 20, I'm 19).

So we said goodbye for about an hour until I had to pack up my car and head home, called him that night and we both expressed how much we miss each other, I thought this could work.

About a week ago he called me and said he didn't think it was a good idea for him to be in a relationship with anyone now. Then he dropped a huge bomb saying he was still in love with his ex. HUH??? He only ever mentioned her ONCE in any of our convos, and he said that "she was the type of girl who when I'm single she doesn't want me, but when I'm taken she wasnts what she can't have". Yeah big alarms started going off in my head after I hung up on him. Was it the distance that turned him away? Like he got to thinking, missed me, and she was there to kind of compromise me not being there? I asked him if he saw her and his reply "Like only for a second"...yeah right. I'm so confused though! Why did he never tell me he still had feelings for her before getting involved with me?? We were in a relationship through and through, no lies. Here's the interesting part, he's 20 a junior in college, and she's 17, a senior in high school...why?! AH!! I'm just so confused, help!

should i try to win him back? if it was the distance that seperated us, couldn't feelings resurface? none of this makes sense, he's such a sweet guy, i don't know why he would do this.

Sounds like he wanted a quick f*ck. He sounds like a jerk you would be way better off with someone else.
