should i give up?, long distant relationship Options

so me and my bf have been going out for 6 months, almost 7
he moved to san diego last saturday
and since he has left he has only called me once
it seems like we dont talk as much as we used to
i thought that long distance relationships were supposed to be all about communication and such
so when i tell him we dont talk as much, he says we do, because we still text
but i dont think that texting and talking on the phone is the same
when i get sad about him being gone and not talking to me, he gets mad.
i dont know if i should try and work this out and maybe tell him that he needs to put an effort out to call me and such, or just give up
and there is no reason why he should have troubles calling me, but he does

any advise on how to keep this relationship going?
or should i just call it quits?

yeah, he finally called me, and i told him how i felt and he said he would try to make more of an effort.
also, i hung out with some friends, and it helped get my mind off of everything, so i feel more calm talking about all this. so it helps

i am 17 and he is about to turn 18
