Lawyers for the 26-year-old hotel heiress said theywould launch an immediate appeal against her sentence, imposed by a Los Angeles court yesterday. Howard Weitzman, defending, said: "I'm shocked, I'm surprised and disheartened. He said the sentence was "uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous". And he added: "I think she's singled out because of who she is." Hilton, the star of reality show The Simple Life, was caught driving twice despite still being banned following a drink-drive arrest last September. She tearfully claimed not to have looked at a document she signed in January saying she was banned. Hilton told the judge: "I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all." She said advisors had told her she was free to drive for work purposes. But Judge Michael Sauerbranded Hilton a liar as she wept in court. The judge said: "She wanted to disregard everything that was said and continue to drive no matter what." Hilton's mother Kathy had laughed out loud when prosecutors said her daughter deserved jail. When the judge sentenced her to 45 days, Kathy asked him: "May I have your autograph?" Hilton was ordered to report to a women's jail in suburban Lynwood on June 5 or face her sentence being increased to 90 days. The court had been told that as well as being caught driving twice, she had failed to enrol in an alcohol education programme which was a condition of her probation. In January, she had admitted driving recklessly under the influence of alcohol in Hollywood in September. But the same month she was stopped again, with a third arrest in February. The judge said he would not offer her the option of being electronically tagged or paying to serve her time in a more acceptable jail as some celebrities do. |
