I wildly associate members with avatar/sig over anything else. Someone who's been around forever can change their username and I'll never notice as long as their avatar or signature stays the same.
So yeah, that's the first thing I notice/remember about people, after that I start to remember silly things such as first names and usernames - and as anyone in the chat knows, I'm TERRIBLE with first name/screenname association.

I'm a visual person, so thats how someone catches my eye. Also, as Anna mentioned, the users presence and font also helps me keep people straight. |
