Did anyone bend your future career to something else?
Recently, my private teacher and i were talking about my future, when we were doing some real old basic algebra problems. Unfortunately, I'm not good in math. Yeah, I had a hard time working/thinking w/ these problems. Man, i was sad. I wanted to become a space scientist after high school. I spoke to my teacher about my major and college. I thought it would be fun talking t o her about it because science is my passion. i always enjoyed science since i was a little elementary school kid. I told her that i want to major in astronomy and other astro-classes. She says, "... but, Steven. This is too hard for you. You need to know a lot of math... Most of my student w/ the same service as you didn't finish college or drop out of school" When she mentioned "service", it's for people who have certain learning disabilities like me. It's true that science requires a lot of math. Math is a subject that I lack/struggle the most in. Yeah, I'm sort of depressed. All my passion for things in life is always being blown away. I don't want to end up like any teacher who once say, "I didn't really want to be a teacher, i planned to be someone else but I wasn't qualify for it/ didn't have money for it/ government problems/ something went wrong, and etc. |

Steven, don't give up.
Don't let anyone discourage you; don't believe in whatever they say. Anything is possible if you try hard enough. If you're struggling in math, I can help. Math is one of my strong suits. ![]() ![]() You're still learning, there's still time for you to progress. Just believe that you can do it. Never give up on your dreams. Around the same time last year, I wanted to major in business. I dunno, it's just.. my parents encouraged me to become a stock broker or something like that because I was good with money. I spent a while thinking about it, and finally came to the conclusion that I didn't want to have a stuffy, boring job like my sister. I want to have a job that can help me learn. At the same time, I was in an astrophysics program. It was something I really liked and I thought that it would be a good career for me. I thought a lot about this and reached the conclusion that being a spectroscopist/astronomer would be better than having a business-related job. At first, my parents thought that it wasn't a good subject for me because science isn't a good subject for a girl, but I changed their minds when I started spending large amounts of money at the mall and blowing their trust. ![]() It's when I started thinking about college that made me sad. I sometimes look back and think that the colleges (Caltech, Stanford, Columbia, etc) that I want to get into would be impossible for me. My first term as a freshman just really sucked. My average barely hit 90. My parents always told me "If you want to get into Caltech, you're gonna have to do better in school." What they said really hurt me because I thought that I was really trying my best in school, but apparently not. Now, I'm doing better in school and I've definitely set my mind to becoming an astrobiologist. There's still 3 years left for me to decide, so maybe I'll change my dream to some other astronomy-related job. The only thing I know for sure right now is that definitely I want to major in astronomy.. |
