how many of you know someone who says incredibly demeaning, degrading, insulting, etc. things to people but everyone ignores/deals with it because that someone is supposedly "funny"?

i have a friend like that and honestly, sometimes i wonder why i laugh at his jokes or encourage him or plain deal with him.

for example, his long running joke is that asians are useless, wrong, stupid, ugly, etc. apparently, we're to blame for everything bad that happened in the world. on several occcasions, he has said all asians should die or something bad should happen in asia to cut the population (i.e., he actually thought that hot 97 tsunami song was funny. in an tragedy where thousands of people died, i hardly see any humor in it). being chinese and recently actually having my grandfather die from terminal cancer, it really offends me. it would offend me if anyone said another should die when they clearly have done nothing to hurt you. that is so inhumane and indecent.

but... no matter how i plead with him (he used to tease me mercilessly years ago and reduce myself esteem to rubble) and tried to get him to understand that words can hurt. he told me to shove it because if someone can't have a sense of humor and take his "jokes", then they are weak. wtf? i think there is a fine line between jokes and harassment. when you call someone ugly/stupid/fat/slut/skank/aids everyday for months on end, that's harassment. you never know how someone would react to your words because you have no idea where they come from.

as much as i hate to admit it... there are many of other people like my friend. even on cB, i see incredibly rude/obsence/degrading remarks. when has it been okay to make racist/sexist jokes or to humilate someone? when has it been okay to wish that someone was pregnant (one of the relationship topics)? once in awhile, i can understand. but when has a constant degradation of other people been okay?

do other people just sit back and ignore it? or do you do what i'm doing, cutting the person out of my life in general?

/incredibly long rant.

Ive seen a situation like that for almost every ethnicity I can think of....
I'm gonna guess this is happening in a high school because if this were a college it would be a hell of alot easier to completely ignore that person.
Anyways, generally people who do this are popular with their crowd as they're the "funny" comedian, and even if someone were to have an issue with what that person were saying, he usually wouldnt do anything because hed fear of being ostracized from the group.

And if thats not the case, then hes prolly just lazy and doesn't wanna cause any conflicts
