Okay, so I have dialup. And it's slow and VERY annoying. Whenever I've found out about getting faster internet I'm always told that I will need to get a ton of stuff for it to work because I live kinda out of town (although I can see the high school from my window) and my house is old.

Is there way for me to get Broadband or something faster than old dialup by myself? I've tired to search through some things on the internet before but I don't really know where to start blush.gif

Could someone point me in a reliable direction?

I'm pretty sure you can get AOL dsl/broadband anywhere, because it uses a regular phone line, well sorta. I live out in the middle of nowhere, and thats whe used to have when no one else offered service in our area.

But recently we switched to Verizon dsl... I guess it just recently became availible. But its waaaay faster than AOL, and like half the price. And then theres roadrunner... that might just be in my area though.... but only people in newer neighborhoods can get it, since it has something to do with newer phone lines.

I'm pretty sure you can go to Verizon's website and put in your phone number or address and they'll immediately tell you if its availible in your area or not. I think that's what we did.

Yeah, dialup sucks. It's just that my mom wants to keep AOL, which shouldn't really be a problem I guess. But we also don't want to have to deal with someone coming in an installing stuff... All my friends get it through their tv provider and we can't do that.

Well now with AOL, you can keep your email addresses... so its still almost like having AOL. You just have to go to aol.com to check your email.

With Verizon, they just mail you the stuff to do it yourself (the modem, the msn software, and directions). It's really simple. And I think we're only paying $25 a month, for PREMIUM. That's cheaper than dial up from AOL. _smile.gif

But I heard somewhere that AOL is coming out with broadband now.. Don't know if it's available yet though.

It's already availible... I had it for over two years. But once you pay for the broadband, and the basic AOL service, its like $50 a month! huh.gif

And AOL is known to put unnecessary crap on your computer... stuff that'll slow you down and run in the background. Spyware I guess? lol. AOL is just icky though.

Nah, if AOL put spyware in peoples' computers, they could get sued. They just install a bunch of crappy software, which is why you should do a custom install.

If you're worried about virus protection, many broadband companies also offer free Norton Antivirus or McAfee.
