What separates man from its beastly opponents is the fact that humankind is a species of passionate creatures. Passion is the very source of mankind’s greatest achievements; it is what convinces us to continue when we have given up and compels us on our path to success. All humans have passion pulsating through their veins, even if they are not acutely aware of it. Some will find their passions through the grace of an instrument; others may find it through the force of an athletic field. While others fruitlessly seek their passions for ages, I have found it in the tip of a pen.

Fortunately, unlike others who relentlessly search, I am one whose heart came across its life devotion relatively early, for in the second grade I had already attained a burning passion to write. I shall never forget my insatiable desire to write the first short story assigned to me, nor the immense feeling of accomplishment I attained upon its completion. Afterwards, I recall ceaselessly urging everyone to read over my creation: this simple assignment birthed my passion for writing. As I transitioned into middle school, my love for writing and the English language flourished to soaring heights. Having dedicated my efforts towards commendable grades in English classes, I inadvertently devoted energy towards other subjects as well, never allowing myself to submit to anything sub-par. It was only upon my arrival at high school that my affinity for writing truly propelled me in the direction of my destined profession: journalism.

Despite the stress of a new school and tormenting thoughts of the impending college process, I took comfort solely in my writing. While my curriculum offered the standard English course, I came across a class which I knew would feed my desires to enhance my writing abilities: Introduction to Journalism. Having barely noticed the existence of periodicals other than my subscription to Seventeen, the class unveiled my eyes to a world unknown to me before – a world overflowing with knowledge and imagination that instantly extinguished any thoughts of pursuing another profession. Parallel to my beloved course in the school environment, I released my anxiety through blogging and writing at home. Whether it was spilling my thoughts across the internet or scribbling short stories and poems, writing effectively soothed my inherent worrying and anxiety in the beginning of high school. Through these outputs, I was able to alleviate the tension of my teenage angst and fuel my avid lust for the English language.

Once adjusted to high school life, I realized that I was surrounded by others who shared my passion; having dedicated years to my obsession, I wanted to share it with the rest of my peers and help them foster their passions. As such, my friend and I established our school’s Literary Guild. Not only do I receive an inexplicable joy from the development of the members' fervor, but I simultaneously further my own ardor. And so my passion has fatefully driven me down this seemingly endless path, the obstacle that very well determines my future: college. Since second grade I have nurtured my fascination; college will either flourish or douse it, determining where I will decide how my prospect will pan out in the coming years. The beginning of the next stretch upon the long road will bring with it a new set of joys, friends, enthusiasm and fear. Hopefully the University of Southern California is where my dreams are able to realize their full potential.

Passion truthfully defines us all. It is what picks us up when we are at our lowest and thrives upon our success. Achieving one's passion is a road of hardship and strain, but the results are well worth it. Acclaimed writer Joss Whedon, I feel, captures the meaning of passion, claiming, "Passion - it lies in all of us. It guides us. Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we can live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow empty rooms, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we'd be truly dead."
