it was intended to scare kids and show them how easily they get influenced to do stupid stuff, like drugs. they wanted to show: sticking leeches on yourself just cause everyone else is doing it is just as stupid as doing pot/drinking/shooting up just cause everyone else is doing it.

however... after the commerical aired, some really stupid people thought it was real and actually started doing it. you can't get high from leeches - doctors use it to treat poor blood circulation in broken vessels.

if you don't remove a leech properly, it "throw up" into the wound or leave behind some parts and infect it.

sometimes, people's stupidity astound me. it even says at the end of the commerical, "what could you be convinced to do?" and then the words turn into pot.
