So what do you guys think about the new ban on 'anorexic' runway models? Do you think it's going to.. help at all, or is it just futile?

If I may, I'd just like to include a quote by Karl Lagerfeld on this whole issue.
QUOTE The idea of ‘regulation' is revolting, but so much today. Models are about looks, not about weight. For me, it's not even an issue; it's part of this new politically correct fascism. And I have to say...I think I agree with him. And not because Lagerfeld is amazing (though he is), it's because I agree with how all we ever do is think of ways to make everyone happy, to always be politically correct. Yes, there are girls who are influenced by the size of runway models, but the growing number of anorexics and bulimics are caused mostly by self-esteem issues not caused by how other people look. How models look might be triggers for their behaviour, but without a serious lack of self-esteem, this obsession with weight in our society probably would never occur. A girl who is affected by how skinny runway models are probably shouldn't be complaining about the designers and regulations (or lack, thereof), she should get help with her own issues. It's easy to scapegoat someone convenient, and while I do think the fashion industry has something to do with this obsession with weight, all the blame shouldn't be put on them alone. |
