Your iPod was dead, so you have to wait a few minutes for it to charge. It can't connect to iTunes yet because it's too low on power. Give it a few minutes. Then it'll begin to charge properly. OK, I reread it and I think that was a typo? Reset it--toggle the hold button a few times and then press the middle button. If that doesn't help, check the Apple support site for more help.
