http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G470rfJQCI This woman's father organizes people to go to the funerals of soldiers from iraq, holding signs saying "thank god for dead soldiers". "God is punishing this nation, and one of his wepons of choice is sending your children home from battle, dead." How do all of you feel about that? Do you think that these people have the right to intrude on something as solemn as a funeral, to shame these people and the dead soilder? Do you guys think that God is really "punishing the nation"? I'm not condoning the war, and i'm DEFINATLEY not agreeing with this woman or her "church", but i also do not believe that it's the soldiers' fault we're there. Quite frankly i can't believe insane people like that exsist. *i believe this goes in the debate section, but i appologize if it's in the wrong place* |

QUOTE This should serve as a warning to the power of faith as foundation. I think this is the real issue in contention. Faith and beliefs are abstract...values, if you will. Both are slippery creatures subject to much change and development. Numerous incidents can shape our faith. And who can say which is right or wrong? Psychotic, sick, crazy, evil people aside, you can take two perfectly reasonable people, and they could sit on perfectly opposite sides of this fence. Who's right is it to say who is right or not? My case in point is this: yesterday, in my criminology class, we were discussing a case of an island (which actually exists) where the men were regularly having sex with girls of 10. The men didn't seem to realise they were doing anything 'wrong', and the girls didn't complain. Now, I do believe in a great many countries now, this would be seen as paodophilia. But if these people were born into this kind of society where this type of conduct is the norm, on what grounds do we march in there and convict them all of child molestation and the like? I agree that the proper rites and respect are due every grieving family and I am UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES condoning the acts of this woman; I am simply arguing the theory behind her behaviour and people's condemnations of her. (I condemn her too, but I also realise that she has a right to her beliefs) |
