Is this really happening? Options

I know there's gotta be tons of topics on this, but I'm trying to figure out if this guy really does like me, or if I'm just going crazy again.

To start things off, we've been good friends since 7th/8th grade (we're juniors now), and i've liked him off and on since then, and he's always known that. I've ended up telling him that a couple of times over the years, but he never seems to feel the same way about me. I told him again back in November, and he told me that he kinda liked me, but kinda liked another girl too... and didnt really want to be in a relationship with anyone. But then I found out that he had been dating the other girl days before telling me that, so I was mad at him for awhile... but he apologized, and everything was fine. But then he breaks up with her a few days before Christmas, because he realizes that he didnt feel the same way about her that she did about him, she kinda got stalkerish, AND it turns out that she had been lying about her age (she's really just turned 15 instead of 17).

So I guess about a week ago, he called my house about 5 times in one day while I was at my aunts house, just wanting to talk. So my parents give him my aunts number, and he calls several more times while I was gone. Then I try to call him back a few times, and it goes to his voicemail. Then he tries to call me back, and I'm not there to answer. This goes on for a day or so, us both trying to call each other. Then finally New Years eve, we talked for at least an hour about random stuff, like how our Christmas' were and stuff, and he mentions that he broke up w/ his girlfriend (his first one, who he only dated a month). He talked about how he shouldnt have ever dated her, about how he shouldnt have lied to me, blah blah blah. Then after that, he trys calling me a day later, but I was never able to get back in touch with him.

Then this last Wednesday, our first day back at school, he gave me a birthday card (just for laughs) that reminded him of me, which really surprised me. And now since then, he's been trying to hang around me alot more than he used to. He even makes sure he sits next to me at lunch, something that he used to not do as often. I'm just getting the vibe that he likes me, but I'm scared that I'm wrong. I dont want to open up and tell him how I feel like I have before, because I'm afraid the same thing will happen again. When he sorta lied to me about not wanting to be in a relationship, and then really already having a girlfiend, I was afraid that I was going to be his back up plan or something... and now that he's not with her anymore, I'm starting to thing that all over again.

I've never had a boyfriend, so I have no clue on what to do. Help?

Okay, first off, there's only 20 kids in our grade (small private school) and we have every class together.

Well, I come into class this morning.... and he doesnt really talk to me. He doesnt ignor me or anything, he was just hanging out with his friends and didnt bring me into the conversation, even though I was standing near him. Then all throughout the day, he acts like nothing ever happened with us. Its like he's gone back to how things were before the Christmas break... we were always friends, just not THAT close. He's acting totally different that how he did last week and on our date.

And then for lunch... like half of my class (non jocks) sits at the same table everyday together. Me and him usually end up sitting next to each other, but today he askes a few of his friends to eat outside with him.... RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, and didnt ask if I wanted to go along. He briefly smiled at me though.... but whatever. And the thing is, I'm friends with the people who went outside with him.

Then after lunch, he never comes to study hall. We usually sit together too. I think he skipped by going to Journalism. But then in Chemistry, he goes back acting just like he did last week.... the way that I expected him to act earlier. And then he goes back to hardly talking to me in art class... and there's only 7 of us in there.

So I'm guessing he didnt really mean for our date to be a date... and he's freaked out because he knows that I thought/wanted it to be one. So I'm guessing its the text message that I sent him Saturday that's freaking him out. All I did was ask if it was a date or just hanging out, and he responds that he guesses it was, and wantedto know what I thought. So I replied that I was hoping that it really was a date. Then I get no response.

Or could he just be being shy or something? He's really not the shy type.
