Is this really happening? Options

I know there's gotta be tons of topics on this, but I'm trying to figure out if this guy really does like me, or if I'm just going crazy again.

To start things off, we've been good friends since 7th/8th grade (we're juniors now), and i've liked him off and on since then, and he's always known that. I've ended up telling him that a couple of times over the years, but he never seems to feel the same way about me. I told him again back in November, and he told me that he kinda liked me, but kinda liked another girl too... and didnt really want to be in a relationship with anyone. But then I found out that he had been dating the other girl days before telling me that, so I was mad at him for awhile... but he apologized, and everything was fine. But then he breaks up with her a few days before Christmas, because he realizes that he didnt feel the same way about her that she did about him, she kinda got stalkerish, AND it turns out that she had been lying about her age (she's really just turned 15 instead of 17).

So I guess about a week ago, he called my house about 5 times in one day while I was at my aunts house, just wanting to talk. So my parents give him my aunts number, and he calls several more times while I was gone. Then I try to call him back a few times, and it goes to his voicemail. Then he tries to call me back, and I'm not there to answer. This goes on for a day or so, us both trying to call each other. Then finally New Years eve, we talked for at least an hour about random stuff, like how our Christmas' were and stuff, and he mentions that he broke up w/ his girlfriend (his first one, who he only dated a month). He talked about how he shouldnt have ever dated her, about how he shouldnt have lied to me, blah blah blah. Then after that, he trys calling me a day later, but I was never able to get back in touch with him.

Then this last Wednesday, our first day back at school, he gave me a birthday card (just for laughs) that reminded him of me, which really surprised me. And now since then, he's been trying to hang around me alot more than he used to. He even makes sure he sits next to me at lunch, something that he used to not do as often. I'm just getting the vibe that he likes me, but I'm scared that I'm wrong. I dont want to open up and tell him how I feel like I have before, because I'm afraid the same thing will happen again. When he sorta lied to me about not wanting to be in a relationship, and then really already having a girlfiend, I was afraid that I was going to be his back up plan or something... and now that he's not with her anymore, I'm starting to thing that all over again.

I've never had a boyfriend, so I have no clue on what to do. Help?

^Well, I dont think that's the case.

It was driving me crazy trying to figure out what it was... so I finally asked him.

I'm happy to report that it was indeed a date.
