I need help from all you Bay kids to drop some knowledge on your region. Since I grew up on the east coast and now live in the south, I'm accustomed to hearing rap/hiphop from both areas. But the problem is, I like West coast hiphop, I just don't know much about it past its uprising in the early 90s.

You should really explore the wikipedia's entry on Bay Area hip hop and Bay Area hip hop groups Also check out thenationofthizzlam.blogspot.com and yaymecca.blogspot.com, they combine insight with a wide variety of relatively new music from the bay that you will have difficulty finding outside of a record store.
Basically, most modern rappers in the yay can be considered either hyphy rappers or "Mob music" rappers. Hyphy is a brilliant marketing gimmick brought to you from the same people that brought you crunk. Seriously...Too Short and E-40 both have their own labels with distribution deals linking them to Lil Jon's BME/Warner Brothers. This isn't to say that people in the Bay weren't going dumb at sideshows or ghost riding the whip or gas brake dipping before it was marketed; we've been up to this shit for a long time and its FUN! And some rappers in the Bay have an awful lot of talent: Mac Dre(RIP), Andre Nickatina, Messy Marv, San Quinn, Mistah F.A.B., Yukmouth. |
