What kind of eye make up (colors, eye liner thickness, etc.) makes eyes look bigger?

My grammie, when I was younger, heard that if you trimmed the eyelashes a little, they'll grow longer.. Well, she kept on "trimming" mine and now I barely have anything. I have to buy those eyelash grow-ing gel things.
