I remember having a conversation with my stepmom half a year ago about how my own grandmother thinks I'm a big stupid loser because I'm not in college at the moment, I don't have a car, I don't have much money, and I didn't have my own apartment (which I do now). My stepmom made a point, saying that in her eyes, I'm not successful because most of society views success as being financially stable and in college or working a respectable job. She said that my grandmother's perspective of me is flawed, so instead of seeing me as an intelligent, mature young adult, she sees me as a lazy, unsuccessful teenager, thus making me immature and stupid-- basically, a failure at life.
Anyhow, that got me thinking: if the normal people believe that the only definition of success, what would the more intelligent people have to say about it? What, in your opinion, is your definition of success, as an individual? (And if this topic is repeated, I'm sorry; I searched many keywords and didn't find anything on it.) |

What, in your opinion, is your definition of success, as an individual? (And if this topic is repeated, I'm sorry; I searched many keywords and didn't find anything on it.) Have you been stalking me? Tahts freakin story of my life. I've had thedrema of making music and beign successful at it and because I didn't make straight a's and make plans to go to college that I'm a lazy failure trying to use music as a way to laze my way through life. No matter how much I succeed at what I'm doing (like writing songs and recording them and putting together a website etc etc) because I'm not in college with a job with a corporation working miserably 9-5 5 days a week I'm a failure. Even though I enjoy what I'm doing and I will suceed they don't want to see it. I could be working at blockbuster(and I was) and they respected me more than for what I'm doing now. sucks. to me, success is happiness. I you wake up everyday satisfied with where you are and what you are doing, then you are successful. It depends on the person. And it takes time sometimes. I hate how peope think if you get a college degree you are automatically a success. My boyfriend is about to get a general studies degree, andall that willdo for him is get him a better job at thefast food joint. Its worthless...but because is a degree all of a sudden its worth something. I've got a full fledged plan for my life and I work hard for it everyday, andI'm a lazy slacker who will never amount to anything. So like I was saying, when you wake up and look at your life and are satisfied with yourself, that is success. Success can't always be compared to others because we're all supposed to be unique right? I mean sure I look at my successes and I compare it to say Beyonce or something, because we are both in the same thing. she is successful, and I'm not yet. But you can't compare me to say my cousin Lauren who is in school to be a teacher. But to everyone around me she is going to be successful and I'm not. Even though the second I win something or make some money the same people will be there acting like they supposerted you all along. I say base your success on yourself. Living a full happy life by your standards is success. at least...I think so haha. Success for me personally is grammys, platinum albums, fame and influence. I wanna be able to reach people through my music, and when I finally reach the point that I become a positive role model, I'll see myself as successful. Anything from that point on is just icing on the cake :) |
