Hey all. I'm in a book club called Chick Lit, and as you tell by the title, we're more into literature with females playing the lead role. We need new ideas for our next book, but I just know someone is going to pick a "chick lit" book that's going to be completely girly and that doesn't have any substance. What I'm looking for is a book that does have a female lead role, but actually has substance and meaning. You know, something that's really deep, kind of like the book Speak. Oh, and it can't be part of a sequel. Any ideas? Any recommendations are appreciated! Thanks.

Anything by Sophie Kinsella. Especially the Shopaholic Series. The main character is fabulous.
And Meg Cabot is great to |

Anything by Sarah Dessen has a good theme to it. Especially This Lullaby and The Truth About Forever. I don't think I've ever read anything by Sarah Dessen, so I'll check her out. Book clubs, how fun. For summer reading I chose My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. That is one of the few summer reading books I couldn't put down. http://www.jodipicoult.com/my-sisters-keeper.html I love that book. It was excellent. Unfortunately, the book club has to pick a book that no one has read. This Lullaby was suuch a good book. Hmm if you're looking for like..adult literature, Pride & Prejudice? or maybe Gone With the Wind? lengthy, yes. but literary standards. Pride and Prejudice is an option. I've always wanted to read Jane Austen but I've been busy with the other books on my list. Gone with thd Wind would be a good read too. Thanks! The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a pretty popular one. (= It is popular, but when I read it I thought it was too girly for me. I know the other girls in the club have probably already read it, however. I was completelyyy thinking about Sarah Dessen books while reading the first post. And adding on to the praise about This Lullaby, it's one of my favorite "chick lit" book. I also enjoyed 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. I guess everyone loves Sarah Dessen. I'll have to check her out. I'll check out Little Blue Envelopes as well. Thanks for the recommendations! If anthologies count, I'd suggest anything by Alice Munro (she writes short stories). I don't believe anthologies count, but I'll ask. If not, I can always read Alice Munro's stories on my own time. Thanks! Anything by Sophie Kinsella. Especially the Shopaholic Series. The main character is fabulous. And Meg Cabot is great to Oh, I forgot about the Shopaholic Series. My friend recommended it to me and said it was really funny, and she's a hard to please kind of person |
