I used Jasc Paint Shop Pro. ALL PICTURES ARE THUMBED!
I started with this picture of my friend:  I duplicated the picture and greyscaled one.  I copied the greyscale picture and pasted it on top of the other one as a new layer. You can now close the other greyscale picture, but I'll keep it there, just so you know what it looks like without color.  It should look completely greyscale now. Important: Pick the eraser tool. Then use the fuzz brush (it shades better). The size depends on how big your picture is or how much you want to color.  Then you just erase the grayscale, so you see the color underneath. Merge both layers:  And then save! It should end up something like this. Sorry it looks kind of messy:
