well, i was listening to the cover, and i realized something.

i just realized how lax security is at my school.

i mean, sure, we're across for a police station, but there's not that many police there during the day, it's mostly a place they part thier cruisers when it's not thier shift.

there certainly isnt' a swat team here. nearest one would be at least 2 hours away, as that's how far the next biggest city is. personally, i don't think birmingham or nashville has one, so i think it'd come down to atlanta and that's 4 hours.

factor in that my high school has very few windows (probably 10 in all, for over 100 classrooms, and the fire exscapes are easily blocked, and it's easy to see how the school could be taken over.

more discouraging is the fire code has required fire doors put in, and these close when the fire alarm goes off. However, these doors can also be locked, leading to a trapped in senario.

the entire school wouldn't be able to be taken over by a few students armed with shotguns, although they could take out an entire pod, sans 2 rooms (the only ones with fire escapse), which would be about... 120 students.

the most disheartening thing is the memory of the russian school thing, where the terroists took over a school.

i never looked up how many kids died, but watching a bit of TV was quite enough.

but schools are soft targets.

even if every school had armed security guards, a team of terrorists would be able to pull of the greatest terror event of all time.

i mean, sure, blowing up buildings is pretty terrifying, but targeting kids is worse.

makes me afraid for the day someone actually does it. hope it never comes.

At my old high school we had quite a few terror scares, bomb threats, shootings, and drug trafficing. Eventually, during my sophmore year, the school finally decided that enough was enough and they needed better security. So they decided to have 4 police officers present at all times, had metal detectors put in, 30 security cameras, and a police officer in a crusier outside. It was great because after all that we only had 2 shootings and 1 all out fight; much better then the custom.

If something like that were to happen at my old high school it wouldn't get too far. The high school is located in a very urban neighborhood so we would have enough police presence quickly. The only problem I can see with that school is that the way its designed, someone could easily block off the two roads that lead into our school and cut off any way of getting help through.
