I don't understand. I have friends that say they are depressed. They have no reason to. Maybe if they were starving to death and lived in Africa, maybe they might have a reason, but they live a normal American suburban life. It's ridiculous. Does anyone agree with me, or no?

I agree just a bit, but not totally. As far as I'm concerened the only thing (almost) that matters in life is being happy. If someone is not happy, that doesn't mean that giving the "african kids have it so much harder hten you" speech is going to make them feel any better. Who cares if they have the greatest life in the whole universe? if they're not happy than obviusly they don't. You say tons of kids would love to be them, well I don't tihnk tons of kids would "love" to be depressed all the time.
It's probably just those teen hormones (or w.e) kicking in, or maybe friend problems? girlfriend/boyfriend problems? parent problems? There are all kinds of things that can make someone depressed, and almost all of them are in their mind. You could suggest going to see a phsychiatrist if they're depressed allll the time, and it's getting serious. Or maybe yoga, or just walking on the beach or something. I've been depressed before and sometimes it only takes little things to make you happy again. Other than that I don't think there's much you can do, or say, that'll make them less depressed, so I'd just let time take care of it. And ya, I have some friends who are depressed all the time, and I have some who are happy all the time, just depends who you're born to be. Just be glad you're not one of the depressed ones
