I don't understand. I have friends that say they are depressed. They have no reason to. Maybe if they were starving to death and lived in Africa, maybe they might have a reason, but they live a normal American suburban life. It's ridiculous. Does anyone agree with me, or no?

Agreed, Stately Lover.
Depression is NOT just something you can just 'get over'--it's a psychological disorder. If you get over it after 2 days, it is not depression. It was just a stage of being sad. Depression is not easy to overcome, and to do so takes the help of trained psychologists and (sometimes) psychiatrists. Depression may or may not require medication, but it does require professional help. Depression is a disorder. Sadness is an emotion. Get it straight, people! |

Get it straight, people! i know the person he's talking about, and she is clinically depressed... when you talk to her about it she basically tells you that its her own fualt for being depressed. she makes all the wrong descisions in her life. if she did the right thing for once she wouldn't feel depressed... depression is not easy to over come, but you can overcome it. you don't need the help of professionals, you just need someone who cares about you and knows how to tell you that you're being stupid in a way that you will understand. |

i know the person he's talking about, and she is clinically depressed... when you talk to her about it she basically tells you that its her own fualt for being depressed. she makes all the wrong descisions in her life. if she did the right thing for once she wouldn't feel depressed... That's exactly what a person who is depressed would say. Many depressed individuals resort to blaming themselves for their state—but that doesn't make it true. depression is not easy to over come, but you can overcome it. you don't need the help of professionals, you just need someone who cares about you and knows how to tell you that you're being stupid in a way that you will understand. Depressed individuals are not "being stupid"—they are suffering from an accepted disease. Having caring friends and family helping is definitely a good thing, but they shouldn't just tell the person that they're "being stupid". Many times, depressed individuals have just reached such a state of despair that they are under the impression they can never overcome their problems. Sometimes they do need medical attention, too. Depression is often caused by chemical or hormonal imbalances. At any rate, a trained professional is often needed to help depressed individuals. I think you're confusing "depression" with "being a whiny teenager". There's a difference. Some teenagers are just whiny; some are actually suffering from depression and need help. |
