and i really only think of him as my friend. i mean i don't really like him but he likes me and it came as i total suprise. i don't know what to tell him. i mean i think it'd be fun but i don't want to lead him on. what should i do?

Talk to him slowly and seriously what you just said here. Try to make him not feel stupid for liking you. Say something like "I'm really flattered that you like me." and/or "Thanks for liking me that way." to lighten up the mood and just to make him feel good/okay that you know. Then say to him that you trust him to understand that you don't want to lead him on by going to the prom with him. Say to him that you're telling him this because you don't want to hurt him. You know, just make him feel okay and not stupid liking you.
