and i really only think of him as my friend. i mean i don't really like him but he likes me and it came as i total suprise. i don't know what to tell him. i mean i think it'd be fun but i don't want to lead him on. what should i do?

I think you should say something like, "Uhm, sure I'll go to prom with you, but as friends okay? I just..don't want to get involved in anything just yet."
Just try your best to make things not sound rude.. I mean, it's the truth, right?  The truth does hurt sometimes, even when you don't want it to. How he takes the news of you just wanting to be friends with him, is up to him. Good luck.
