"Breaks" has a different meaning to all people. Some don't believe in them. But the point of a break most likely, is to allow some space between the couple. It basically is a way to stop the arguments, and allow you to spend more time with other people. If the couple are happier like this, then it turns into an official break up. If the couple realizes that they need each other more than ever, then they come back from the break and resume their relationship.
