I live because I haven't achieved all that I want to, I haven't become everything I can be, and because I haven't explored the entire world in all its forms.
Some people talk about a purpose or meaning in life, and they are living to find it. I don't know how true that is. I think that life is inherently meaningless. There's not much point to it. Any biological organism lives a while, passes on its genes, and dies--but why? Surely that's not the purpose to life. Life is only meaningful if a person injects their own meaning into it. I think many people, including myself, do that by trying to find the bounds of their curiosity. An interesting person cannot ever find the bounds his curiosity, and so hopes to live long enough to find as much out about the world that he can. I can't really say I live for some ultimate goal. The ultimate end of any life is death, and I'm surely not living for that. I certainly have things I hope to attain, but I don't have one all-encompassing goal for my life. Maybe that's why I live--because I live in the present, not the future, and I don't really attempt to achieve anything, so I just maintain the status quo, which is simply living. And while I'm alive, I figure that I might as well spend it productively, by trying to live out the limits of my imagination. Basically: There's a lot of fun stuff to do in this world, and I only have a limited amount of time to experience it all, so I might as well make the most of it while I still can. |
