I stumbled upon this "blog rant" by JK Rowling. (No, I don't read anything by her, I just found this at random)
http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/extra..._view.cfm?id=22

I've noticed there is a lot of rage towards thin girls, and I'd like to know why. Also, I'd like to know why people think that just because you are small that you are empty-headed and void of intellect.

Perhaps it's only jealousy? Why be angry at someone else because of the way they look, and then follow by calling them shallow when they are the ones who are passing judgement upon someone's appearance? If they have such a problem with it, either move on and be happy with yourself (versus insulting someone who is thin) or lose weight and become thin yourself. I find it especially ironic how these are often the same people who believe that all shapes and sizes are considered "beautiful", but then still harp on how terrible skinny girls are.

Are the normal/larger girls really the shallow ones, for passing judgement? Or is it the thin girls, who take pride in their appearance and maintain it, or simply are just small?

Are the normal/larger girls jealous?

All of the above? None of the above? Share your opinions with me. I'd like to know.

Speaking from a personal perspective, I am a small person. It's only been that way for about 5 or 6 years of my life. I did diet to become smaller. Well, maybe not diet, more like starve myself. Puberty helped, too. :p
I also have a small bone structure, and am just naturally a smaller person. Why should I get the crap from larger girls when I am just, well, me? I do believe I have a brain, and I'm not some mindless airhead just because I'm thin.

There does seem to be a bit of a backlash against people who don't fit the "normal" body type (i.e. people who are "too thin" or "too fat"). Calling someone fat does seem to be a common insult that girls levy against other girls; yet saying a girl is thin is akin to calling her a bitch or something equally bad, because it comes with the connotation that a "thin" person must be dieting, thus must be anorexic, and thus is just perpetuating the societal urge to be thin.

It does seem to be a case of sour grapes. A person wants to be thin due to media pressure, but can't quite achieve that ideal; so she projects her own self-consciousness onto others by insulting their thinness. This, I think, is clearly much like a girl calling another "fat": Girls in particular are afraid of becoming fat, so by calling another girl fat, they are projecting their own fears onto her, and making everyone scrutinize that girl, rather than herself. The net effect is that both words become useful as insults.
